Senate Appropriations Committee Approves Higher Spending For Long Term Care Ombudsmen, Nursing Home Surveys
The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved the following appropriations increases for Fiscal Year 2002:
- $3.5 million more for state Long Term Care Ombudsman Programs under Title VII of the Older Americans Act. This would increase funding for the program to $12,949,000.
- “Continued and additional funding” for the National Long Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center. The center currently is funded at $550,000.
- $18.5 million more for state survey and certification. This would bring the total appropriation to $260,647,000.
The whole Senate began debating the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill October 31. After the Senate votes, a conference committee will be appointed to reconcile differences in the House and Senate bills. The House has passed an appropriations bill with lower funding levels for these programs.
Senator Herbert Kohl (D-WI) sponsored the amendments to increase funding for the programs. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), chairman of the Senate subcommittee on appropriations for labor and human services, supported overall increases in Older Americans Act programs.
