February Business Plan Working Group Meeting

NCCNHR’s fifth Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on February 23, 2010, in Washington, DC.The purpose of the fifth meeting was to continue work on the business planning process and to set out a schedule for the reviews and final deliverable of the plan.

Among the topics discussed were the updates on the Need and Opportunity section of the business plan. BPWG members provided feedback to the first draft of the section, and revisions are in progress. The BPWG also set a timeline for each draft and review cycle for each section of the business plan, and defined the process for feedback. A set of Social Impact Strategies to implement NCCNHR’s mission was reviewed and the human resources needed to implement these strategies was also discussed.

Also discussed was the Measurement section of the business plan, including performance indicators and the measurement process. As a follow up to this meeting, Root Cause will work with the BPWG to meet the schedule set out for completing the business plan sections, with the goal of delivering a final plan by April 30, 2010.

January Business Planning Work Group Meeting

NCCNHR's fourth Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on January 28, 2010, in Washington, DC.  The purpose of the fourth meeting was to prepare for the upcoming discussions on NCCNHR's governance structure at the January 29-30 Board meeting, and to move forward the business planning process.

Among the topics discussed were programs and policy criteria.  BPWG members received an assignment to review and will provide feedback on the criteria prior to the next meeting.  NCCNHR staff will develop a list of potential program and policy initiatives for discussion at the next BPWG meeting.  Also reviewed and discussed was the outline for the Need and Opportunity section of the business plan.  BPWG members received an assignment to review the draft section and provide feedback prior to BPWG 5.  The group also revised the social problem, mission, and vision statements to reflect additional research and input from Board Buddy discussions.

Looking to the future, the Business Plan Working Group also reviewed and brainstormed a set of strategies to aid in the implementation of NCCNHR's mission.  Also assessed were NCCNHR's operating model and future activity criteria.

December Business Planning Work Group Meeting

NCCNHR's third Business Plan Working Group (BPWG) meeting was held on December 10, 2009, in Washington, DC.  The purpose of the third meeting was to continue discussions of NCCNHR's governance structure and to move forward the business planning process.

In keeping with the topic of governance, the BPWG discussed NCCNHR's current governance situation as well as the types of issues that similar organizations had encountered and the solutions that they employed.  Also discussed were possible governance options for NCCNHR and the importance of a strong line of communication with NCCNHR's board as this process moves forward.

BPWG members will contact each Board member to discuss specific governance issues and seek needed input.  Board member input during the discussions will help move forward preparations needed for the January Board meeting.

November Business Planning Work Group Meeting

NCCNHR's second Business Planning Work Group (BPWG) meeting was held in Washington, DC, on November 5, 2009.  The meeting focused on refining the roles of the BPWG, brainstorming key issues and discussing action steps during the planning process.

The group discussed Board member involvement and communication procedures and brainstormed key issues such as funding and program prioritization and criteria.  Also discussed were NCCNHR's definitions of its "social problem" and "vision statement."  In this case, a social problem was defined as a concise description of the social problem that NCCNHR's members want the organization to solve.  The vision statement asks the organization to envision what the world will look like many years in the future if the social issue is successfully addressed.

As a follow up to this meeting, BPWG members will contact each Board member to discuss progress to-date in the business planning process and seek needed input on specific topics.  The Board members' inputs will inform the planning process in subsequent BPWG meetings.
